David Judge from Affordable Staff and welcome to our RAW q&a session around outsourcing.

We’ve created these series of videos for businesses that have considered outsourcing and they have genuine questions or concerns that need answering.

The format? 3 questions and 3 answers based on over 275,000 hours of outsourcing experience.

Let’s get into it!

What is a BPO and that does the term mean?

BPO is an acronym for Business Process Outsourcing which is basically when you contract tasks to a third party service provider like our business for example.

A BPO that is contracted outside of a company’s country is offshore outsourcing or offshoring.

BPO is not as commonly used in Australia but is very commonly used in the Philippines.

What is ‘Managed Outsourcing’?

To best explain Managed Outsourcing I need to start with why Outsourcing Fails…

I’ve found there are 3 common reasons ‘outsourcing’ fails within a business.

The first is under utilisation, which is where there are tasks that can be performed, but either the business or team member cannot align to get the tasks started or fully realised.

The second is communication, which is where the outsourced team member and business do not adequately communicate to get the process started or to a particular standard.

The third is integration, which is where an outsourced team member is not embraced as a part of the businesses team as if they were a part of the business but simply sitting in another remote location.

When you use a managed outsourcing company they have specific knowledge and methods to handle these 3 areas with a local Australian contact, as well as supervisors & contacts with people within the Managed Office.

Managed outsourcing companies should also provide measures on a person to ensure they are completing their tasks and if they are specialists in particular fields they will also know how long those tasks should take.

So essentially managed outsourcing helps to bridge the gap for a business to utilise, communicate and integrate the outsourced team members through proven methods.

Our clients also prefer managed outsourcing as they know they can get a HOLD of a person in Australia whenever they need to.

As a parent, how do you feel about destroying your children’s opportunity of getting a job and essentially being a part of destroying the Australian economy?

In 1865 2 british officers are standing in office in Bombay (India) in one of the hottest days in history, experiencing a bit of reprieve swirling and listening to the clinking sound of ice cubes in their drinks. The only problem is Freezers as we know them would not be invented and commonly used until the 1920’s.

At this same time in Boston (USA) ice farmers were cutting ice (like in the movie Frozen) and shipping to different countries around the world. For 55 years ice farmers dominated the market of global ice shipping which also created a new industry for trains, ships and labourers.

With the invention and acceptance of the ‘ICE BOX’ in the late 1920’s this entire industry disappeared overnight and many thousands of people tried to STOP the introduction of the icebox as they said it was going to destroy too many people’s lives.

This has happened time and time again as industry finds ways to innovate to create change and in reality this will continue to happen in the future. In business, the only constant is change and instead of asking how I feel about destroying the industry you should ask what your children and your children’s children can do to be a part of that change.

Let’s be honest, we’ve all been outsourcing for years… we outsource our children’s education to teachers, we outsource our money to banks and the growth of outsourcing is INEVITABLE as businesses find ways survive in this constantly changing environment.

We are in the position right now where we can influence how outsourcing can be integrated into our economy and more importantly how it will impact the roles our children have within our society.

I was buying a bottle of wine for a dinner party and the guy behind the counter mentioned he was graduating from media & arts with a specialty in Web Design. He said he wouldn’t be able to get a job as a lot of that stuff is now done overseas. That’s a conventional way of looking at it, yet I know in that industry there’s huge shortage for project managers and auditors. So whilst outsourcing has directly impacted people on the tools building websites, it’s created another sub industry in demand.

So is the question really how I feel about ‘Destroying the Economy’ and the chances for our children or, is the question more around the fact that innovation creates change and how we can influence that change to understand the jobs we need to create for our children?

Ok, that’s it
